Colored Noise

A consistent flooding of noise in the ears mutes out thoughts and places us into a deeper, introspective state.

Sift through the colored noise below, find a comfortable place, close your eyes, and listen to the static din for an introspective boost.

How Colored Noise Works

Though noise is defined as a random signal, it is often classified into areas: environmental noise, industrial noise, occupational noise, etc. It is also further classified into colors.

Engineers originally developed colored noises to use as guides for electric, acoustic, and audio equipment experiments. Each noise was named after the color it most closely resembled in frequency. Different colors vibrate at a different frequencies, which is how the human eye distinguishes them. Interestingly. in the early 1970s, colored noises were used to test for extrasensory perception.

Dr. Charles Honorton, among other parapsychologists, believed white and pink noise played through headphones could mute out the senses and make a person more amenable to subconscious thought. In Ganzfeld Anomalous Information Transfer experiments, extended exposure to white or pink noise was often successful in inducing in subjects hypnagogic and other altered states of consciousness. At a minimum, a few minutes of white or pink noise placed people into a deep state of meditation.

It’s never too late to change directions in life and fulfill your dreams instead of just your obligations.

Estonian Photographer Kylli Sparre is a perfect example – she discovered she wanted to be a photographer only after completing professional ballet school.

When the studies were over, I realized it wasn’t the path for me. I have been searching for an outlet for my creativity ever since. [A few] years ago I found it in photography and never looked back. – Kylli Sparre

Her ballet background seems to influence her surreal photography, as the models in her dream-like pictures are filled with grace, poise, and elegance.

Hopefully, her passion and courage will inspire others to follow their dreams.

Wild Child – Crazy Bird

I’ll wait around for days
this porch on which I pace
I need you mine I need me yours
You stole my breath away
You swore to me you’d stay
I’ve found something that I adore
Oh how
How we supposed to go on
Not knowing if you
bleed the way I do
I do (well I did)
are your eyes traveling elsewhere
You need to know I got the bones rolling hard against the floor
And if you left i’d break until the little pieces felt no more
Whisper the things we’d scream
now kid let’s not get mean
I need you mine I need me yours
Four walls and fancy friends
Don’t need me none of them
Because I’ve got you know and that’s enough (Well I’m glad)(Well so am I)
Let’s take good from our past
Patch holes with things that last
Let’s tear it up here you and I
Oh how
How we supposed to go on
Not knowing if you
bleed the way I do
I do (well I did)
are your eyes traveling elsewhere
You need to know I got the bones rolling hard against the floor
And if you left I’d break until the little pieces felt no more
Well these fights sure do take a lot out of me
but the secret I can tell you is I still do believe
I can’t promise that I’ll always be careful with things
But just know that I’ll expect it if you ever do leave
Sweet Marie
I love your name
Oh babe
can you turn your heart this way
Oh how
How we supposed to go on
Not knowing if you
bleed the way I do
I do (well I did)
are your bags traveling elsewhere
You need to know I got the bones rolling hard against the floor
And if you left I’d break until the little pieces felt no more

Taking Micro Doses of Psychedelics Can Enhance Mental Function and Physical Ability

Taking Micro Doses of Psychedelics Can Enhance Mental Function and Physical Ability | Third Monk image 1

image_1362025485135140-5312

Micro-dosing is taking sub-perceptual (6-25 microgram LSD, 0.2-0.5 gram dried mushrooms50-75 microgram mescaline HCL) while keeping up with ones daily activities, engaging in extreme sports, appreciating nature or enhancing one’s spiritual practice.

This manner of integrating psychedelics, also known as a psycholytic dose, doesn’t inhibit ego-functioning as the ‘heroic’ Terence McKenna dose does. It can be much easier integrated into everyday functioning.

What are the benefits of taking psychedelic micro doses?

Athletic Performance

James Oroc, the author of the amazing book Tryptamine Palace: 5-MeO-DMT and the Sonoran Desert Toad, while writing about the secret affair between psychedelics and extreme sports, stated that while taking psychedelics at lower doses, the “cognitive functioning, emotional balance, and physical stamina were actually found to be improved.”

Virtually all athletes who learn to use LSD
at psycholytic dosages believe that the use of these compounds improves both their stamina and their abilities.

According to the combined reports of 40 years of use by the extreme sports underground, LSD can increase your re- flex time to lightning speed, improve your balance to the point of perfection, increase your concentration until you experience “tunnel vision,” and make you impervious to weakness or pain.

LSD’s effects in these regards amongst the extreme-sport community are in fact legendary, universal, and without dispute. – James Oroc

Sprituality

Myron Stolaroff, while writing about the usefulness of psychedelics in the practice of buddhism, argues that low doses of psychedelics can be extremely beneficial to improve ones meditation practice.

The use of low doses often can be much more effective in dealing with our “psychic garbage.” Many do not care for low doses because they can stir up uncomfortable feelings, and they prefer to transcend them by pushing on into higher states, but it is precisely these uncomfortable feelings that must be resolved to achieve true freedom.

With low doses, by focusing directly on the feelings and staying with them without aversion and without grasping, they will in time dissipate. Resolving one’s repressed feelings in this manner clears the inner being, permitting the True Self to manifest more steadily. The surfacing of buried feelings that this procedure permits often can bring new understanding of one’s personality dynamics

Creativity and Problem Solving

In the 60′s the creativity enhancing effects of psychedelics were already hailed as revolutionary, and these famous trippers would certainly agree. One significant study investigated the effect of 100 micrograms of LSD on top of the field experts who had been struggling with a hard problem for months. Their solutions were reviewed by a panel of other experts in the same field. As Tim Doody reports;

LSD absolutely had helped them solve their complex, seemingly intractable problems. And the establishment agreed.

The 26 men unleashed a slew of widely embraced innovations shortly after their LSD experiences, including a mathematical theorem for NOR gate circuits, a conceptual model of a photon, a linear electron accelerator beam-steering device, a new design for the vibratory microtome, a technical improvement of the magnetic tape recorder, blueprints for a private residency and an arts-and-crafts shopping plaza, and a space probe experiment designed to measure solar properties.

Experimenting With Psychedelic Micro Doses

To be able to experiment with these states of conscious in a safe and constructive manner, be sure to follow these guidelines.

  1. Start out with a dose on the lower end of the psycholytic spectrum and record how you react to it. A too high dose makes you incapable of following your normal routine and you stay in the limbo/coming up phase the whole time, which is neither clear nor trippy and often uncomfortable.
  2. Follow your normal routine, especially sleeping, eating, working and spiritual practice.
  3. Be conservative with consecutive doses. Building a tolerance is unlikely, but having a normal baseline improves integrity of action.

Swiss Plan to Pay Monthly Basic Income to Each Adult

Swiss Plan to Pay Monthly Basic Income to Each Adult | Third Monk image 2

Switzerland may start paying every adult (whether they work or not) a salary of over $2000 per month.

Based on the idea that their citizens will have more time to devote to things they are intrinsically interested in, instead of spending the majority of their time worrying about how they are going to survive; as many individuals with entry-level positions find it hard to meet their needs.

The income initiative promises every Swiss citizen a living wage, so they can always survive without basic financial worry.

The 2,500 francs would work out to be an income of 30,000 Swiss francs per year. Statistics released by the European Union in 2002 showed that Switzerland was the third most expensive country in Europe, after Norway and Iceland, to live in.

Switzerland currently has a population of 8.02 million people, equivalent to that of large cities such as the San Francisco Bay Area which has a population of 7.15 million. The Swiss pay particularly high prices for meat, cooking oil, fish and vegetables. Basic utilities (electricity, heating, water, garbage) are around 200 francs per month, and the average rent of a one bedroom apartment in the city center runs about 1,400 francs.

Imagine you are being born and society tells you ‘Welcome, you will be cared for, and asks you what you want to do with your life, what is your calling? Imagine that feeling, that’s a whole different atmosphere. – Daniel Straub, Co-founder, Basic Income Initiative

Basic Income Swiss

Parliament was presented with a petition signed by over 100,000 people, proposing to afford every citizen, regardless if they are working or not, a monthly paycheck of 2,500 Swiss francs.

To mark the day, a truck full of 8 million five-cent coins was deposited on the square and spread out in front of the Swiss Parliament in Bern, supporters gathered around and spread the coins out using shovels. A typical fast-food worker in the US earns roughly $1,500 per month. Anything less than that specified amount of 2,500 francs, would be deemed illegal, even for people working in one of the lowest paid jobs.

A date for the vote itself is yet to be confirmed, however, it could take place before the end of 2014.

The money to fund the measure would likely be supplied by the Swiss social insurance system, so in other words it would be taken from taxpayers. We know that the government has no money itself, everything that it gives to others it must first take from others or print it out of thin air.

This new system will force business owners to pay their workers a certain wage, regardless if their labor is considered worth less than the stipulated amount. This idea aims to set the minimum standard of living higher, but this might prompt business owners to take their company elsewhere, where they have more freedom over wage decisions. Of course, this would also mean they get no cut whatsoever of the Swiss market.

On the other hand, the new income may also lure new business owners to the country in looks of attracting those new consumers. One prominent CEO in Switzerland has stated that if the measure passes, he would seriously contemplate moving his company out of the country:

I can’t believe that Switzerland would cause such great harm to its economy. – Glencore CEO Ivan Glasenberg told the Swiss Broadcasting Corporation.

The unemployment rate currently remains at 3 percent in Switzerland and is arguably one of the most stable economies in the world. The nation has built the reputation of having some of the most friendly laws toward foreign investors.

Will this measure make more money flow, by putting liquidity in the hands of those more prone to putting it back in the economy, or will it drive investors away and cause the Swiss economy to stumble?

Mark Ryden’s The Gay Nineties West at the Kohn Gallery was a wonderful success.

The artist explores Victorian decorative design, clichéd notions of “Main Street USA,” small business and immigration (“The Meat Shop”), and vaudeville shows with a dark and complex sentimentality. Integrating the Christ figure and Abraham Lincoln with his wide-eyed, petticoat clad ingénues, Ryden presents the viewer with an unreal and very oddly camp version of American history.

His is an exploration of what becomes cliché, what becomes kitsch and what becomes forgotten.

Yet through it all Ryden makes some of the most richly rendered, beautifully glazed, idealized yet disturbing works of contemporary art. Like his contemporaries John Currin, Lisa Yuskavage and Neo Rauch, Mark Ryden uses a skillfully honed technique to render his polished and emotionally charged works.

The Distortion of Sound is a documentary about the decline of sound quality and how technology has changed the way we listen to music. It will open your ears and inspire you to reach for richer, more soul-stirring musical experiences

140712_dos_compression

The last two decades have seen a striking decline in the quality of sound and listening experience. Compressed music, MP3s and streaming, have diminished the quality and flattened the emotion.

Marketing gimmicks and convenience now take the place of excellence.

Weaving a Home: Collapsible Woven Refugee Shelters

Weaving a Home: Collapsible Woven Refugee Shelters | Third Monk image 17

Abeer-Seikaly-Refugee-Shelters-3

Human life throughout history has developed in alternating waves of migration and settlement. Navigating this duality between exploration and settlement, movement and stillness is a fundamental essence of what it means to be human.

Abeer-Seikaly-Woven-Shelters-4

In the aftermath of global wars and natural disasters, the world has witnessed the displacement of millions of people across continents. Refugees seeking shelter from disasters carry from their homes what they can and resettle in unknown lands, often starting with nothing but a tent to call home.

27

Designed by Abeer Seikaly, “Weaving a home” reexamines the traditional architectural concept of refugee shelters by creating a technical, structural fabric that expands to enclose and contracts for mobility while providing the comforts of contemporary life (heat, running water, electricity, storage, etc.)

weaving-home-winter-660x371

Design is supposed to give form to a gap in people’s needs.

img15

This lightweight, mobile, structural fabric could potentially close the gap between need and desire as people metaphorically weave their lives back together, physically weaving their built environment into a place both new and familiar, transient and rooted, private and connected.

Taking The Piss

Banksy is an anoynomous English street artist and activist who has become a cult hero for his anti-establishment and rebellious artwork.

Unlike someone I know, who stays in his house all day drawing comics and watching Simpsons reruns, Banksy is a REAL artist who challenges the status quo, forces people to think and puts himself in danger, all while remaining a complete mystery to the world.

I mean think about it, he’s one of the most famous artists on the planet, his work has been popping up in major cities for the past 10 years and sell for millions of dollars and no one knows who the hell this guy is! I take my hat off to the dude. – Gavin Aung Than, Zen Pencils

Make a Bee Bath and Help Hydrate our Pollinators

Make a Bee Bath and Help Hydrate our Pollinators | Third Monk image 3

Bee-bath

Imagine how hard just one bee works in a single day.

Bees tend to at least 2,000 flowers daily, with tiny wings beating 10,000 times per minute, carrying pollen, and dramatically assisting our food supply.

Sound exhausting? Bees get thirsty, and they need safe water sources. The problem is water is not always readily available.

Bee-Bath-2Bees need very shallow water to drink from. However, shallow water evaporates quickly. Birdbaths are not the best option as bees tend to drown if the water isn’t shallow enough. As for river and lakes, bees risk their lives trying to get water in the presence of fishes, frogs, and other wildlife, not to mention the risk of being swept away in water currents.

To help hydrate our little pollinators, set up a bee bath by filling a pie pan with marbles and then water. The marbles give the bees a spot to land so that they don’t drown when they come to drink.

Now you have your very own Bee Bath and no more drowned bees!
