Wanderers – Short Film Narrated by Carl Sagan (Video)

Wanderers - Short Film Narrated by Carl Sagan (Video) | Third Monk image 2

This short film provides an inspiring look into the future, where humans visit other planets in the galaxy. The narration by Carl Sagan, philosophically explores our natural instinct to go far beyond our starting point.

The film is a vision of our humanity’s future expansion into the Solar System. Although admittedly speculative, the visuals in the film are all based on scientific ideas and concepts of what our future in space might be like, if it ever happens.

All the locations depicted in the film are recreations of actual places in the Solar System, built from real photos and map data where possible. – Erik Wernquist, Filmmaker

Fist of Jesus – Gory and Hilarious Zombie Short Film (Video)

Fist of Jesus - Gory and Hilarious Zombie Short Film (Video) | Third Monk image 1

Fist of Jesus is an outrageously bloody comedy short film about a Jesus who kicks ass in a world full of Zombies, Mutants and Sinners.

Support the Fist of Jesus IndieGoGo:

We want to make our 90 minute Feature Film in the style of the 80’s B movies, avoiding computer FX at all costs – we do not want digital effects. We want our monsters to be entirely physical, and when a corpse bursts open it looks real and spatters the actors! This means that most of our budget will go towards the creation of physical FX – makeup, characterization, animatronics.

Our dream is to make a comedy that is a cross between the New Testament and “Mad Max”, with the humor of “The Life of Brian” and the style of Peter Jackson’s early works like “Bad Taste” or “Braindead”. Above all it is an epic movie – Jesus’ journey compared to that of Odysseus or Atreyu in “The Never Ending Story” or any of the “Conan” films, but crazier, in the style of Ash in “Army of Darkness”. – Directors Adrián Cardona & David Muñoz.

Tidy Monster: An Animated Descent into Madness (Video)

Tidy Monster: An Animated Descent into Madness (Video) | Third Monk

Tidy Monster by Tim Marchant is an animated descent into the insane mind of an unseen character.

A symphony of sound, visual effects, and mood where a room is all there is in his world, and we watch as he struggles to keep it tidy.

From the comments I’ve read some people are claiming the video is awesome to watch while tripping; others instead assure such an experience only leads to a bad trip.

I haven’t tried watching it on psychedelics, but if you do, be aware of the possibilities or consequences, depending on your perspective.

Remember, ultimately, what is happening to the room is up to you.

Requiem for Romance – Amazing Animation About The Beautiful End of a Relationship (Video)

Requiem for Romance - Amazing Animation About The Beautiful End of a Relationship (Video) | Third Monk image 7

A young couple’s secret love affair comes to a bittersweet end during an evening phone call as cell phone static creates distance between them.

In this “crouching love, hidden breakup” story, inspired by 50’s Shanghai water ink animation & kung fu films, themes of distance, tradition, art and longing dominate a telephonic conversation as a martial arts tango provides the visual backdrop.

– Writer/Director/Animator: Jonathan Ng

The sounds of the animation were composed by Kid Koala, from Deltron 3030.

It’s Not You, It’s Me – Short Film Comedy About Smothering Relationships (Video)

It's Not You, It's Me - Short Film Comedy About Smothering Relationships (Video) | Third Monk image 2

Gillian Jacobs (Britta from Community) plays a woman whose smothering relationship is literally driving her crazy, causing her to act out in hilarious rage. As a hybrid genre of dark comedy, the film has to hit both comedic and suspenseful story beats. Director Matt Spicer uses invasive sound and camera design to make a dull life maddening before kicking it over the edge.

Entertainment Weekly: Wow, this is dark!

Gillian Jacobs: I read the script and I thought it was an interesting thing for me to do. I hadn’t done anything serious or dark like that in a while. For me it was kind of nice to go back to something that’s a little bit darker than what I’ve been doing lately.

Entertainment Weekly: We don’t get to know much about your character. Did you create a backstory for her?

Gillian Jacobs: I didn’t even create a name for her! We talked a lot about how you reach that point in a relationship where you guys have been together for long enough that little tiny things about your partner start to drive you insane. We talked about that down to sounds they make while eating that make you want to put a fork through their face or stab them with a coffee table. – Gillian Jacobs, It’s Not You, It’s Me Interview

Cheat: A Man’s Guide to Infidelity, Comedy Short Film (Video)

Cheat: A Man's Guide to Infidelity, Comedy Short Film (Video) | Third Monk image 1

Comedians Bill Burr, Robert Kelly, and Joe DeRosa team up to make their own self-produced short film, Cheat Together this trio brings to life the very funny story of a desperate guy getting advice from his buddies on how to pull off an unfaithful hook up.

The initial set-up leads you to believe this film is about something totally different, so that initial twist engaged me immediately. This is a very New York story, and the dialog is really well-written. The interaction between the three characters and comedic timing is spot on, which is no surprise considering the leads are all professional stand-up comedians. – Sharon Badal, Head Short Film Programmer, Tribeca Film Festival

* Navigate strip clubs, massage parlors, and women of the night

* Lie like a woman—and call it quits without getting caught

Successful Alcoholics, Short Film About Drowning in Pleasure (Video)

Successful Alcoholics, Short Film About Drowning in Pleasure (Video) | Third Monk image 3

The glories and pitfalls of immersing in vices are the focus of Jordan Vogt-Roberts‘s short film, Successful Alcoholics, which structures a young couple’s weekend meltdown into a perfectly timed dark comedy.

The drunk couple, played by Lizzy Caplan (Party Down) and T. J. Miller (Comedian), manages to excel at work, get out of tickets, and live without a care in the world, despite or because of the fact that they’re permanently shit-faced. The two drink, break shit, vomit, undress, curse, and still do better than everyone else. They manage to please everyone in the face of pretty ridiculous altercations, but when just for a night they lose their buzz, they start to question their own happiness.

With a premise that keeps the couple out of trouble, successful, and out of the humdrum of the everyday, Vogt-Roberts gives himself room to explore the real emotions regarding alcoholism. successful-alcoholics-poster1

5 Ways to Brainstorm Science Fiction Plots for Scripts

5 Ways to Brainstorm Science Fiction Plots for Scripts | Third Monk image 2

In science fiction, you need a great idea that lives in your mind and leads to characters and situations that inspire you. Here are five tips to help you generate science fiction plot ideas for your next script or book.

Look at the Big Unanswered Questions

science-fiction-story-ideas-aliens-shroomsLike, did aliens spread magic mushrooms across the universe to monitor signs of life?  And what’ll happen at the end of the universe? And so on. The bigger and more insoluble the question, the less likely it is your answer will be disproved next week. Once you come up with your own weird explanation for a big cosmic riddle, then you can work backwards from that to create a story around it .

Add Philosophy to the Mix

science-fiction-story-ideas-prometheusAs Arthur C. Clarke would tell us, science fiction has the ability to get really cosmic and massive in its explorations of the big questions. Who are we, where do we come from, who created us, and so on. A lot of philosophers are moving into territory formerly occupied by physics, because physics is dealing with the big existential questions. You, too, can leave behind “hard” science and get into the big questions about meaning — and the result might actually be purer science fiction than if you just stuck to the actual science questions.

Project Today’s Problems into the Future

science-fiction-story-ideas-monetary-systemThere are things that we all sort of know, but we don’t really grasp them because they’re too huge and unthinkable. Science fiction, in particular, has a lot of ways to talk about uncomfortable, weird facts without getting preachy or sledgehammery, by changing the setting or scale. You can make people identify with someone who’s smack in the middle of future water wars, and drive home the likelihood of water shortages without ever lecturing.

Imagine the Consequences of a New Scientific or Technological Discovery

science-fiction-story-ideas-google-glassesTry to imagine how a brand new science could wreck the lives of people in the future. It’s always more interesting to see people struggling with new technology than to watch them just do the happy “yay new technology” dance. Think of all the possible ripple effects from a new miracle technology — and then pick one of the least obvious to build your story around. The short film Sight explores privacy issues that arise with technology similar to Google Glass.

Give Truth to False Beliefs

science-fiction-story-ideas-bender-immortality-futuramaWe all have beliefs we’ve discarded over the years. Everything from “Santa Claus is real” to “authority figures are always right”. Pick a belief you used to hold, that’s been disproven by events or that you’ve outgrown for some reason and try to imagine a universe where that belief is true. Take all of the energy of your former belief, plus the distance that comes from your change of heart, and try to create a story around that.
