Venom: Truth in Journalism, Comic Book Short Film (Video)

Venom: Truth in Journalism, Comic Book Short Film (Video) | Third Monk image 2

This short film features Marvel’s Venom (Eddie Brock) as a New York City crime journalist. The story is shot in the same style as Dog Bites Man (which follows a horrifying day in the life of a psychopathic serial killer).

Starring Ryan Kwanten
Written & Directed by Joe Lynch
Produced by Adi Shankar & Sam Balcomb

Collider: How did this new short come together? Who came up with the idea?

Producer Adi Shankar: You take Man Bites Dog and mash it up with a well-known anti-hero. It’s a concept where you take a character that’s inherently over the top and you drop him in an overly realistic grounded reality and have everyone around him scratching their heads as to why this individual is behaving like a cartoon character.

Collider: Talk a bit about the philosophy behind making these shorts.

Producer Adi Shankar: I don’t subscribe to the school of thought that as a feature film producer I shouldn’t dabble in television, web content, or even comic books … that thinking perpetuates the consumerist mosh pit we are now desperately trying to dig ourselves out of. I have a burning desire to entertain and different mediums allow me to do this in different ways.

These shorts are as much a part of my filmography as the movies are, I care about Dirty Laundry (Punisher Short Film) as much as I care about my upcoming movie The Voices. Kevin Smith called me last week after Comic-Con and encouraged me to make more of these. He told me that the vast majority of the people you’ll deal with in Hollywood won’t care about these shorts because they can’t make a buck off it. It doesn’t matter. It’s not for them it’s for the fans. – Producer Adi Shankar Talks about Truth in Journalism Short

David Cross’ epic portrayal of Tobias Fünke is one of the best things about Arrested Development. That’s really saying something too, because it’s a great show with lots of acting talent and superb writers. There’s just some unexplainable quality Tobias possesses that is irresistibly amusing.

quotes-season3

Wilfred just wrapped up it’s third season, and it was great! Ryan and Wilfred have their usual fun, but where the show really shines is character development. The stoner friendly theme draws you in, but it’s the tight writing, deep character development, and strong acting that keep you coming back.

Hopefully, Wilfred will be back for a 4th season – we love the show and don’t want to see it put to sleep before it’s time.

The following quotes show up at the beginning of each episode and usually highlight the theme explored within.

Sunshine, A Visual Masterpiece About Our Dying Sun From Danny Boyle

Sunshine, A Visual Masterpiece About Our Dying Sun From Danny Boyle | Third Monk image 3

sunshine-danny-boyle-4If you were cool enough to catch Danny Boyle’s Sunshine during its 2007 theatrical run, you were treated to a visually immersive film that brought you on board with a space crew chosen to save human existence by replenishing a dying sun. Supporting the eye opening cinematography was the beautiful soundtrack score by John Murphy that has been used in various films and shows like the Walking Dead.

The protagonists of Boyle’s films have included nihilist junkies (“Trainspotting”), enraged zombies (“28 Days Later”), neo-hippie backpackers (“The Beach”) and poverty defying children (“Slumdog Millionaire”). His genres have ranged from black comedy to apocalyptic horror to the metaphysical science fiction themes explored in Sunshine.

Sunshine Trailer – Directed by Danny Boyle

The principle of sensory stimulation is front and center in “Sunshine,” which depicts a manned mission to the Sun. A crew of scientists has been given the task of restarting the dying star by torpedoing it with a nuclear payload. The tone of the film is a throwback to 2001: A Space Odyssey and the premise seems to be lifted from the 1968 Pink Floyd title Set the Controls for the Heart of the Sun. On a related note, Pink Floyd was originally asked to score the soundtrack for 2001: A Space Odyssey.

Sunshine – The Surface of the Sun, Music Tribute

sunshine-danny-boyle-3

One constant in my film career is focus on sheer physical pleasure. I don’t want people to sit there and objectively watch the film. I want them to experience it as something that’s under their skin, so you try to make the films really tactile. – Danny Boyle

Sunshine – Captain Kaneda Meets the Sun

sunshine-danny-boyle-1

Danny Boyle his screenwriter, the novelist Alex Garland, who also wrote the script for “28 Days Later,” embraced the idea that “Sunshine,” precisely because of the vastness of its subject, would be a space odyssey in the most interior sense: a head trip. “It’s like films about mountains,” he said. “They’re not about mountaineering. They’re about the mind. Movies about space raise those questions of what we’re doing here, and that inevitably introduces a spiritual dimension.”

sunshine-danny-boyle-2Boyle tried to inspire a suitable degree of awe for the scenes that simulated contact with the Sun (crew members peer out at the looming orb through Ray-Bans and filtered windows). “I’d say things like, ‘Every bit of you is just a bit of exploded star,’ a nod to Carl Sagan’s philosophies.

Homer and Lisa Simpson Visit the Isolation Tank (Video)

Homer and Lisa Simpson Visit the Isolation Tank (Video) | Third Monk

Each person enjoys a different experience when they float in an isolation tank for the first time. The Simpsons offers a satirical take on isolation tanks when Homer Simpson gets to experience being in one for the first time in the episode “Make Room For Lisa.”

The experiences of Lisa and Homer in their respective isolation tanks are as different as night and day.

Lisa undergoes a spiritual and mystical journey typical of what some people who float regularly report when they come out of a floatation tank. She sees an assortment of images and experiences life from the point of view of her cat Snowball and then Homer. Lisa learns to forgive his behavior and appreciate his efforts to bond with her by doing activities he doesn’t always enjoy.

Homer, however, seems only concerned on whether he can pee in the tank before starting his floating session. Once inside, his isolation tank is seized by repo men and falls out of the back of their truck on a sharp turn. It is found on the road by Ned Flanders and he mistakes it for a coffin. Ned buries the isolation tank and it breaks through the top of an underground water pipe. The isolation tank washes ashore on a local beach and is returned to the new age store. Homer leaves the tank feeling impressed by his “journey.”

Both experiences — one spiritual and the other comical — have positive effects on the relationship between Homer and Lisa. The same is true with others who float. They feel better about themselves and their loved ones.
