La Luz (light or enlightenment in Spanish) is a psychedelic surf rock band that produces music Quentin Tarantino would use to score his films. The band consists of lead singer/guitarist Shana Cleveland, Marian Li Pino on drums, Abbey Blackwell on bass and Alice Sandahl on the keys.
The sound of La Luz merges psychedelic rock with 60’s Motown doo-wop, sprinkled with surf and garage rock influences. The melodic vocal harmonies of the group combined with reverb guitar effects and keyboard jingles makes La Luz an awesome soundtrack choice for a psychedelic road trip.
Hip hop is back!A group from Flatbush, New York called The Underachievers is breathing new life into hip hop. The Underachievers are a dynamic duo created by Issa Dash and AK. Through psychedelicsthey were able to become one and rap with a message.

Its not only The Underachievers that are bringing hip hop back – a few groups from Flatbush are also helping; Flatbush Zombies , Joey Bada$$/Pro Era, and others are also sharing a similar message. The Hiero influences are evident throughout their music. And with Hiero being one of their influences, it’s no wonder they’re on that good hip hop.

NYC-based Mel D. Cole a.k.a.Village Slumshoots mostly black and white, but whatever he shoots, it’s in-your-face and awesome. His work got attention from shooting Erykah Badu and Common in 2001, and since then he’s become known as the “house photographer” for the legendary Roots Crew and has been pinpointed by Questlove as his favorite contemporary photographer.
The MPC (Music Production Controller) is an electronic drum machine used for powerful sampling, interfacing and sound manipulation tools, which broaden the use of instrument beyond just drum and rhythm tracks. Many hip hop producers like Pete Rock and DJ Premier use the MPC to create their classic beats.
I tend to program my drums, but a lot of the time I’ll turn off the 16th notes and I’ll play the MPC live, so it sounds like live drumming. I like it to sound loose, and this is why my drums have a little bounce to them, more than with most people. I’m a big fan of Neil Peart from Rush and Buddy Miles, and in my whole production it’s about the drums. – DJ Premier

Durazzo takes on two MPC 2500s for the live performance of his “Within Arms Reach” beat using Hugh Hopper and Alan Gowen’s “Morning Order”, which also was the sample used in Common’s “Nag Champa”. @Durazzo controls the chopped samples with his right hand and his left hand plays the drums to pull everything together. The performance is 100% in realtime without any sequenced loops.

Sixto Rodriguez’s recent resurgence on the American Music scene can be attributed to a documentary titled: Searching For Sugar Man (Directed by Malik Bendjelloul).
The Menahan Street Band is a New York-based instrumental band formed in 2007, that plays funk and soul music. The band features musicians from other amazing bands such as the El Michels Affair and Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings.
Various songs from their debut album Make the Road by Walkinghave been sampled by hip hop artists, including the title track, which was sampled by Jay-Z on the track “Roc Boys” and The Traitor”, which was sampled by Kid Cudi on his debut album Man on the Moon: The End of Day.
